Wikd wants topics, so here you go: What do you do when you're not making mead?

I'm a web designer and internet marketing specialist. Gotmead grew out of my learning to write web sites, and remains my test bed for new toys and techniques.

When I'm not writing web sites, I'm doing police records management software training for Southern Software. The rest of the time, I'm a work-at-home mom of a 12-year old smart ass daughter, sharing my home with my hubby, my kid, 2 horses, 4 dogs and a couple cats.

Currently I'm trying to get more web site work, as the training thing is dying back a bit.

So, what do *you* do when you're not making mead or hanging out here?

In my shadow life I'm a VP of Global Voice, Video and Data Networks, most recently for large Institutional Asset Manager's in the financial district of downtown Los Angeles.

I mostly do system implementations, migrations, data feeds, frame relay clouds, vid-tel systems, trade data systems, business continuity plans, disaster recovery plans, operations, logistics and all on a global basis from Aisa to Europe.

I'm currently on the Board of Directors for the Croatian Cultural Center of Greater Los Angeles, and on the Advisory Council to the Dalmatian-American Club. I travel to Croatia during the summer to relax on beaches of Dalmatia, and hide out on the islands off the coast in the Adriatic. I'm a barbeque-ing fool and I love to hunt with my dog pFredd! He's watching me now and was giving me the eye so I would make sure and mention his name.

I think he's trying to hypnotize me but I'll never let him get m. . . .

I am a mead drinking alcoholic that spends my time drunk or posting about mead on the Internet when I am able to find the light switch and stagger to the keyboard.

I have been unemployed or unemployable since the local beverage shop finally checked their storage room after six days and found me surrounded by consumed product...

I know it was over $50,000 worth because that raised my little splurge to a class B felony...

I spent 2 1/2 years in prison during which I helped the state of Iowa set up a meadery with which to offset the cost of prison expansions.

OK, I AM JUST KIDDING FOLKS!!!!

I am an Avionics Systems engineer for Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I help to install the radios and computers that help pilots to fly the aircraft on corporate jets as well as regional juets used by some airlines. It ia much more glamorous sounding job than it actually is...

I have a wife of 27 years, a son 21, a daughter 12, a son 8, and a bug-eyed yapping white thing named Jubie that sleeps on my daughter's bed at night. I am a member of the local SCA group. My hobbies are war gaming, model railroad, fantasy roleplaying, and most recently, meadmaking.

I am generally an 18 year old trapped in a 48 year old chassis...
 
I work at one of our local hospitals as a mental health specialist, either on the psychiatric unit as part of support staff, or in the emergency room as a crisis worker doing the psychiatric intake for ER patients. Although I'm a New Jersey native, I've lived in Illinois for over half my life now and consider myself a transplanted Midwesterner. I'm married, have a seven year old daughter, and there are two dogs to add to the household.

Me, I drive a truck. It's a terribly exciting job, what with people constantly finding new ways to try and kill me. My boss is getting tired of the business and wants to get out. Now I spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to buy my way in. Tomorrow is the official first day of business for my wife's flower shop (shameless plug, http://thebloomcloset.com/ ) and we're excited about that. I have recently started researching hydrogen fuel cells and devised a way to make them a practical source of vehicular power. I plan to build a prototype as soon as we have the funds to buy the parts. Beyond that, I spend most of my time either asleep or online.

My best friend, trucker buddy just spent Friday night at my place. We went down to the Amana Colonies and had some of their plum wine (too tart and too sweet but otherwise good). They make honey wine but it is such a pathetic excuse for mead that I avoid it...

But...

He is on his way to Milwaukee or Green Bay to pick up his new rig. He has been driving for some jerk out in Phoenix that screws him over at every opportunity. So Schnieder(sp?) is helping him with the finances so that he can go independent. They are loaning him money to buy a $130,000 rig. I guess he will still get his loads/routes from Schnieder, but will be an independent owner/operator within their system... if something like that would interest you, email me and I will get you more details.

But I have gotten to hear for a several years from him about how bad it is to drive for someone that steals your load bonuses and won't pay to maintain your cab... I suppose a boss that is trying to get out of the business falls into that category as well...

Like I've said in other posts... I work at a Fruit juce Concentrate plant... one for J. M. Smucker. We make bulk fruit conc... 50 gallon drums to tanker's. I've worked there for almost 20 years... I'm head lab tech.
I live about 12 miles from where I was born, my husband was also born & raised locally. Our families are almost within shouting distance. With the exception of 3 years overseas (England) in the military, we've lived here all our lives.
We are proud parents of two kids, a WSU majors graduate daughter who just got married in August and college student son who has interest in animation.
Our pets are a 13 year old cat named Cora and an 8 year old, 4 foot Iguana named Charlie.
I'm a member of a local Rennaissance group, attend statewide Ren Faires and love the Celtic music.
I'm new to Mead making... started thinking (out of the blue) that I could make mead about September of 2004. I'm thinking if I start now... by the time we are retired we will have enough mead making experiece to really enjoy the golden years.

Greetings from the alternate time universe down under,

I work for a Telecommunications company.

I just celebrated 11 years marriage, have three children (girl & two boys).

I'm a christian, and am acitvely involved in church life.

Hobbies include filling cupboards with bottles (and also filling the bottles) 8), gardening, helping set up a model train layout for the boys (or was that for me?).

We don't have any pets - not since a carpet snake ate our finches.

I started making mead because I read an article in a magazine that sparked my interest, and then when I went looking for a "home brew" wine alternative, honey was an easier source of fermentables than grapes.
Have just finished bottling the first kit wine - but that's another story.

I forgot to mention that I started out as a Microbiologist/Medical Technologist at a local hospital. Which is why you'll see some microbiological posts from me from time to time.

Not married, have recently sworn off of redheads . . . again . . . ok really, for the last time; and no kids . . . that I know of!

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

I'm a postal worker - no I don't carry an AK47 to work ;D

Actually I do industrial facility maintenance for the United States Postal Service. So in a nutshell I'm a jack of all trades. My work goes in waves - either too busy to eat lunch, or spending my time on this forum.

I've been married 9 years to the love of my life, two great kids (boy and girl) and we've got 3 cats too many and a ferret (he's my buddy)

I'm a tenor in our church choir

I just sold an antique Jeep that I was going to restore so that I could spend my hobby time and money on meadmaking.
 
Okay, right now I make mead for fun as a hobby. That is all I do for work. For the last 3 years I have done nothing for a living. You could say I'm retired. In the past I was a GIA Gemologist and Jewelry store owner for 14 years, before and during that an ordained Minister, Author of two published spiritual books, before that a FAA Flight Instructor and aerobatic pilot, Fortran Computer programmer for GE Aircraft Division, Computer System Sales Engineer, Computer marketing analyst, Computer Manufacturing Manager for process control computers, Computer repair Supervisor, Foreman and technician, Air Force Radar and bombing computer technician, Cadillac new car service technician, dishwasher, produce worker and other misc jobs for short times like grave sales, building trusses, making hoagies, buying and selling farm equiment, raising cattle, sheep, and pigs and picking up trash, selling cigars, buying and selling coins and sealing driveways.
Yes, I got bored easily and never stayed in a single job for any length of time except the 14 years as a Jewelry store owner/operator. You asked for it so there you have it. My lifes work.
I'm 57 years old and the beard is now gone. (Wife of 36 years requested it gone more times than I could resist). Two children grown up with lives of their own.
Present Hobbies include Mead, RV travel, Snow Ski, Motorcyles (Goldwing and Intruder 1500), Stock Market and writing when the urge strikes.

I'm currently a 3rd year medical student and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark NJ. I make mead as often as I can in what little free time I have. I used to shoot archery as well but haven’t really been able to in the past year due to the time constraints that have become the story of my life. I hope to pursue a career in surgical pathology and am pretty much just taking it day by day for now.
 
Okay, what do I do in the time I don't make mead?
I think about making mead, dream about making mead and plot about how I'm going to take over the world and obtain all the honey my heart desires so I can make more mead.

In my spare, non-mead making time, I'm a budding student of Computer Information Analysis and programming while at work I'm a Systems Integrity Analyst which means I get paid to surf one website. www.aaa.com.

I have a most wonderful wife who loves to watch me make mead and enjoys the fact that her two hobbies both feed and consume my hobby. She loves to garden and grow herbs for cooking and making spiced vinegars from my meads. She currently has a white vinegar going made from my Wildflower dry and a red vinegar from my blackberry mel. Both of which I expect to taste awesome!

We are expecting our first child together. We also have her 14 year old son and her 11 year old daughter living with us. Great kids and I can't say enough about how wonderful they are. Although I would love to get them to stop arguing for 10 minutes, but that's what brothers and sisters do... ;)

At the end of the day, I want to have my own meadery simply so that I can stop giving away what I make and get some cash to make more mead! I'm not obsessed, honest!

Day job: I'm a property and casualty actuary for the only insurance company in West Michigan. I do most of the ratemaking for about $800M worth of business. Pays decent, sometimes intellectually stimulating, but I can't stand sitting at a desk all day.

Working on growing the sheep and beef herds, taking orders for pork, chicken, and eggs, starting up a small vineyard, cidery, and apiary, as well as going commericial with the meadery in '05. Did I mention I don't like desk jobs? ;D

I live in SE Michigan, so naturally I work in the Auto Industry!

In a former life I was a factory rep for one of the big three - but I had the good sense to get out before they tanked and the tires on their SUVs starting blowing up. ;D

The reason for leaving was simple - I was moving back to MI, where I now work for an import company setting service levels for parts sales to dealerships (BO-RING!!!). If you ever need just the window switch, but get told that you have to buy the whole regualtor assy, that's me! :o (Well, not me specifically, I currently do HVAC parts)

Married, no kids, 1 dog, big ole' brewery in the garage, and one misplaced bronze medal from the NHC for one of my meads :'(

Wow! What an absolutely AMAZING array of talents we have here! I feel positively inadequate as just a self-employed web designer. JoeM especially made me feel like an underachiever. Holy Cow, Joe, is there anything you *haven't* done?

Thanks guys, this is the kind of interesting feedback I like, it gives a perspective of the folks I'm doing this for, and makes it all the more important to me to keep doing it and improving it. I hope that my trip to CO for the Meadfest will give me tons of new material to add....

Here's a quick 51 years in a nutshell, born and raised in NE USA around Philadelphia, started in the medical field about 25 years ago where I've been since. My job is a Chief Technican in a out patient dialysis clinic where I keep the kidney machines running, maintain a real neat Reverse Osmosis water purification system and keep medical supplies advailable for the patient's treatments. Hobbies include bee keeping which I've done off and on for 15 years, designing and building working model steam engines, building RC model air boats with weedeater motors, wood working, and occasional trips on my motorcycle. Married for 7 years, happily right now(changes every week or so) no kids, two dogs, six parrots, two bee hives and a Koi pond with all the fish named(Spot, Bait,Tilt,Splash,Floater).
Future plans include a mayor move come springtime to Florida (Daytona area) where I am hoping to semi retire and drink mead while dancing a jig cause I'll be out of the rat race. ;D!!!
