Where do you get your elderberries from?

I hear elderberry wine is excellent. I never see the berries sold. I do see some elderberry syrup concentrate at health food store. Where do you get your elderberries from?

They grow wild throughout the Midwest, not sure how far NE they grow. Look in Damp fencerows, along creeks, field edges. Very distinctive plant, easy to harvest large quanities.

Dried elderberries are available through many brewshops and online.

I have to fight mother nature to pick fresh ones. The best time to find the bushes is during the spring when they are in full bloom; you can spot them a mile away. Then remember where there are to go back and pick them when the berries ripen.

I would love to find fresh ones, which grow all around me, but somehow avoid me. So I mostly buy the canned ones for wine, and some dry ones.

I make port out of the dried ones, and planted a couple of elderberry bushes for fresh ones...

Elderberries are not native to the Rocky Mountain region of the country and so I have to rely on people who are willing to do the hard part (picking, freezing and shipping) for a nominal fee. Come to think of it, I could use some more so if any of you folks know of anyone willing to pick, freeze and ship ripe elderberry clusters (I can separate the stems from the berries as long as they have been quick frozen), please let me know. ;D

I kill my elders and harvest their berries....
