i used 1 jug of light pilsen malt and 2 lbs of corn sugar and added water to fill just past the 5 gal mark. used a muntons brewers yeast. i started it sat but didnt get a sg reading because i had to go to work. had my wife sprinkle in the yeast and in 24 hours it was almost a steady bubble from my airlock. and i checked thebubbles hav slowed way down. sg today was 1.12. how far along am i? how long before you think i can bottle? the reason i ask is i need to plan it out a few days in advance due to a real busy schedual. will it hurt if i leave it on the lees for a week or so after it is done fermenting before i bottle? thanks

SG was 1.120 or 1.012? If it's 1.012 it is probably done but leave it for at least 2 days after the airlock activity stops. Check the gravity again and if it has dropped any then wait another two days.

The yeast will drop out quickly. Faster if the beer is cool. (below 66F) Anytime after the yeast settles it's time to bottle. It can be left on the lees for a couple weeks at most. I would recommend racking it to a new carboy if you can't bottle within a week of clearing.

Enjoy!

you are correct. after further review of my hydrometer "spelling" it was indeed 1.012. it is still bubbling like every 30 sec or so. will it stop completly bubbling? i will check the gravity in a few days to see where it is. thnks for the help

You should be fine waiting a few weeks to bottle, if you're not in a hurry. Otherwise, stable readings ~3 days apart (and in a normal range) is probably a safe place to be. Where you end up depends on what you added, can you explain what a "jug" of malt extract is? 3 lbs? 6 lbs?

Ah, ok then your OG was probably fairly low. A quick calculation comes up with somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.040. I'd expect your FG to be lower than 1.012 unless you really boiled it a lot to caramelize the sugars. The addition of corn sugar makes the FG even lower than you'd expect for your average all-malt beer starting at 1.040, so perhaps you're aiming for around 1.005.

Promash gives me 1.049 for this...

My amber ale kit gave me 1.046 with 6lbs of LME with specialty grains, and finished around 1.010, depends on the yeast too
